If you have spent five minutes researching dog GPS trackers, you have run into Tractive. They are the Austrian company that pretty much set the template for what a modern pet tracker looks like, and they have been at it since 2012 out of a little town called Pasching near Linz.
Here is what they actually do. Tractive makes small collar trackers that use a built in SIM card to send your dog’s location over cell networks, which is why there is no range limit on where you can track. Their newer collars also watch heart rate, breathing and sleep, so the trackers have slowly turned into little health monitors too. The whole thing runs on a subscription, which is the tradeoff you sign up for, and it is the part I always make sure people understand before they buy.
What I respect about them is that they have stayed focused. They are not trying to be a smart collar that also does training and lighting and nineteen other things. They track your dog, they do it fast, and independent testers keep ranking them at or near the top for exactly that. Among dog owners they have become the safe default recommendation, the one you suggest when someone just wants a tracker that works and does not want to gamble on a no name brand.
They are not the cheapest option once you add the plan, and they are not the pick for true off grid living where there is no cell signal at all. But for the everyday job of knowing where your dog is, Tractive has earned its reputation the honest way, by doing the core thing well for over a decade.
